Each year approximately 13.2 million workers sustain non-fatal injuries, such as low back pain and fracture, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, and 862,000 suffer from work-related illnesses- at a cost of $171 billion.

About 70 % of all workplace injuries and disorders involve the neuromusculoskeletal system. Numerous studies have estimated that direct costs of disability range between 8 and 15% of payroll. These figures, however, do not include direct costs, such as hiring new people to replace injured workers, training new people and making allowances for their learning curve, and addressing morale problems suffered by both the injured and by those who must take on the injured workers responsibilities.

Ten most common reasons for failure of injury prevention programs:
(Adapted from materials of the Postgraduate Chiropractic Occupational Health Program at NWCC)
  • Lack of commitment by management
  • Failure to clearly define and assign responsibilities and accountabilities.
  • Failure to establish program objectives and to measure performance outcomes.
  • Misunderstanding of the role of the safety professional.
  • Lack of supervisory involvement.
  • Failure to thoroughly involve all employees.
  • Absent or inadequate program for controlling losses after the fact of injury.
  • Inconsistent enforcement of safety rules.
  • Nonexistent or inadequate training.
  • Failure to consider independence of program elements.
